We hear it all the time. I'm just living my best life. But what is that best life? And are you really living it? In this archived Words of Faith post, I wrote about what it meant to me to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life.
How to live your best life
JULY 29, 2016
1. Find contentment
For me, to enjoy life means to be content. Satisfied. In every and any situation. If your joy is based on what you have or don't have then it is limited. So set your joy free and stop letting the futile things of this temporary world dictate when you should enjoy life. Some practical tips on how to let your joy abound: deal with any negative mindsets, do simple things that make you happy, talk to people that you love, create memories with friends and family, eat food you enjoy, hug people, play games in the park, bake a cake then eat it mmm, read a good book to take your mind off things, get out of bed and do something creative, take a walk, look at the sky...
It costs nothing to be satisfied. If you are not satisfied or content at the quality of your life then ask yourself why? Try to rationalise how you can change that.
2. Understand that life will never not be hard
Life is hard, but are you going to let that prevent you from enjoying and utilising it? M Scott Peck wrote:
"Once we truly know that life is difficult, once we truly understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters".
Life will always consist of problems, trials, obstacles etc. It's as though once you face one problem, another is there waiting for you already. My mentality is one that says: Yes, I'm facing this problem today but I'm going to make a conscious decision to be happy whilst I tackle and conquer this problem so that I can enjoy today and make myself stronger for tomorrow (and the problems of tomorrow).
3. Cease to compare
Comparison will have you feeling like you're not enjoying your own life because you're not doing this, that and the other whilst someone else is. Yes, they're enjoying their life but you don't have to do exactly what they're doing to enjoy yours. Activities can be imitated, genuine emotions can not. So enjoy your life your own way. If all it takes is a packet of crisps for you to enjoy the day then eat that packet!!! Life's activities don't have to be extravagant for one to enjoy them.
4. Find your balance
That fine line between ignoring your problems and resolving them...
With all that said, some problems can't just be ignored and it will never be enough for me to simply say "just be happy", as if happiness doesn't take work. What I can say is: make sure that you do everything in your power to resolve a problem that is preventing you from enjoying life. Once you've done that, it is no longer worth it to worry and stress about it. Worrying will not fix it, actions will and if you've done all the actions that you can then "ignore" it and leave it to God. The peace this brings.
5. Remember kindness
Treat people with kindness and love and good things will just start coming your way. It makes me happy to make others happy so try to put a smile on someone else's face and see if you don't enjoy that!
Those are just my thoughts on how I personally, better enjoy life. For me, once I came to acknowledge and think these things, I began to enjoy my life more. I know that it's a process and it takes time but the little that you can do today will help you enjoy and appreciate tomorrow. Hope everyone has a beautiful day, God bless.
